Street Art with a Story in Wynwood Miami

Street Art with a Story in Wynwood Miami

We found ourselves with a full day in Miami after our cruise waiting for a late night flight.  Fortunately, in the airport we learned about the art district of Miami- Wynwood.  Just like that our plans of shopping to waste time changed to an adventure in art!  We hailed a van, as our group of 7 was far too big for a taxi.  I hoped to see some nice street art. I had no idea I would be treated to block after block of incredible art on almost every building.  I was overwhelmed like a kid given free reign in a candy store!

The plan was to walk a few blocks from Wynwood to some shops for lunch.  It was Sunday and the shops in Wynwood were all closed, and the streets were nearly empty.  With temperatures about 100 degrees, the kids chose to do a driving tour of the street art.

I jumped out of the van often for some close ups, but was able to get many great shots right from the van.  Later in the day at a smoothie shop, we learned that Wynwood was once all graffiti until artists moved into empty buildings there and added street art to the tagged buildings.  Slowly the neglected  neighborhood improved to a place known for art with over 70 art galleries, shops, and bars.

We were amazed to see a middle school decorated with street art on many of the walls.  It was beautiful and incredible.  I later learned the story behind this street art.  Many nonprofits, corporations, local businesses, artists, Wynwood Arts District Association and WynwoodMap.com all came together with school staff to help raise money for Jose de Diego Middle School’s arts and music program.  The community in Wynwood clearly has come together to improve in beautiful ways.

I was impressed and amazed by all I saw and later learned.  I knew I wanted to go back to explore even more.  Then as if all that wasn’t enough, I learned I didn’t even see the famous Wynwood Walls!  An art park and outdoor creation that is ever changing by the best artists in the world.  I was happy to see fellow blogger Adventure Mom went to Wynwood Walls and shares the experience in her blog.

Our street art tour was on the back roads and we saw some of the less seen art.  This last minute adventure led to a day all of us loved.  The great memories of the day are made more special knowing the story behind the street art of Wynwood, Miami.  It just goes to show that an adventure can be found anywhere, and with a little effort you can find truly magical experiences off the beaten path.

We later went searching for street art close to home and found some great pieces in Boston, MA

Man this is beautiful, some really nice pieces there. What a great way to liven up old buildings and they may not have thought of it at first, but It is a great way to attract people and probably brought in a lot of new business to the area.

  11. When I saw the thumbnail and title of the post in #TheWeeklyPostcard Link-up, I immediately suspected it was you, Cathy! You have a great eye for street art and the photos are gorgeous. Coincidentally, I’m currently doing a TEFL course and the theme of this week’s lessons that my fellow trainees gave to the students was urban art! I wish I had seen this post earlier! If you’re ever in the UK, check out Banksy’s work – he does really interesting stuff.

I have seen tons of pictures about this place and would love to visit. Glad you had the opportunity to do so (a tour by car sounds good). By the way, Jose de Diego was a Puerto Rican poet and politician. He founded the the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez (a town) which is my alma mater.
