A test to any relationship is going on vacation together. After two years together, Frank and I went on our first real vacation. We had done some camping and short trips but nothing involving a flight, trip planning, and a whole week away. I am a planner and love to research my trips, so I did my best to make it a great trip. We knew we wanted to visit a tropical island with beautiful oceans for Frank to snorkel and cool off in. I added to the trip wish list a hike of a mountain. The choice became much easier as St. Lucia is known for being one of the most mountainous of the Caribbean islands. A drive in volcano tour put St. Lucia to the top of the list for us. Lush rain forests, waterfalls and hiking make St. Lucia perfect for adventures in the Caribbean!
I knew the hotel we should stay at right away. Sandals resorts are known for being a super all inclusive luxury resort that is adults only which was exactly what we were looking for. Our combined family household has a staggering 6 children count, so an adults only was the get away we needed! Though we like to relax on vacation we both like to be active which makes the all inclusive water sports Sandals offers like kayaking, snorkeling, sailing Hobie cats, paddle boarding perfect for us.
Set on a peninsula, known for calm waters and beautiful views of Pigeon Island, Sandals Grande St. Lucian swayed me to pick it as our resort. Pigeon Island isn’t really an island as it was connected to the main land in 1972. It is a beautiful park that has two small hills, an old fort to explore, and even a geocache that we found. I knew this would be perfect for a short walk, after all the indulging at the 8 restaurants on our resort. Of course there was no need to stay at only one resort, as Sandals offers a stay at 1 resort, play at 3 option. We were able to visit the other two resorts on St. Lucia and eat or play there. We visited Sandals Regency La Toc to dine at Kimonos hibachi style oriental cuisine for dinner one night. It was well worth the shuttle ride over to see the other resort and for the added variety for dinner.
One of my favorite memories of the trip to St. Lucia was hiking Gros Piton! A full day trip from our hotel on extremely winding roads was not the best for me as I get car sick but it was well worth it to hike to the top of such an iconic mountain. While the mountain is only 2,530 feet high the humidity made the hike more challenging. Walking through rain forests, seeing hummingbirds and many outlooks with views of the ocean made this hike very different than our normal hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The summit had excellent views of the ocean and glimpses of neighboring St. Maarten and St. Vincent islands. Sandals did an excellent job of organizing all the details for us, which was great for being able to enjoy the hike itself.
While not a recent trip I like the idea of sharing this wonderful trip and reliving a great vacation. Paying tribute to the past is a good way to both share memories but also see how far you have come. This trip started a journey for us and really gave both of us the travel bug! Thank you St. Lucia for helping to create RoarLoud!
